Montenegro to Bosnia by Campervan: Insurance, Tolls & Overnight Rules
Checked 27 August 2026 ยท Official sources where available
Quick answer
For many European-registered vehicles, Bosnia recognises the registration plate under the Multilateral Agreement. Montenegro is listed in that regime. But the bigger practical change after the border is camping: Bosnia is not a country where you should assume informal wild camping is automatically permitted.
Camper rule: local signs, protected-area rules and police/municipal instructions always beat a general country guide. Vehicle category can depend on height, axles and maximum authorised mass.
Border documents
- Carry registration, licence and your motor-insurance documentation.
- If the camper is rented, written cross-border permission is essential.
- Check whether the rental company excludes Bosnia from roadside assistance even if border entry is permitted.
After the border
- Bosnia uses distance-based tolling on parts of the Federation A1.
- Plan registered camps or authorised camper stops rather than a random roadside overnight.
- Remote route planning should account for narrow roads and residual mine-risk warnings off established routes.
