Green Card Insurance for a Balkan Camper Trip: Albania, Montenegro & Bosnia

Do not assume your camper’s insurance document requirements are identical at every Balkan border. Bosnia and Montenegro both publish country-specific regimes: some plates are accepted as proof, while vehicles from certain countries must carry a paper Green Card/IMIC.
Camper rule: local signs, protected-area rules and police/municipal instructions always beat a general country guide. Vehicle category can depend on height, axles and maximum authorised mass.
Bosnia example
- Bosnia’s bureau says Albania, North Macedonia, Türkiye, Ukraine and several other countries are in the Green Card regime and must present a valid paper Green Card/IMIC.
- Vehicles from Multilateral Agreement countries can generally use the registration plate as the international insurance proof.
- If neither proof applies, frontier insurance must be purchased.
Montenegro example
- Montenegro uses a similar split between Green/White Card countries and the registration-plate regime.
- Its bureau specifically lists Albania, North Macedonia, Türkiye, Ukraine and others among countries requiring the paper card.
- Always verify that “MNE” or “BIH” is not excluded on your insurance document.
Rental camper
- Ask the rental company for written permission to cross every planned border.
- Check territorial exclusions, roadside assistance and whether ferry/off-road use affects cover.
- Carry paper copies even if you also keep scans on your phone.
