Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a “park anywhere” country. Camping regulation differs across the Federation of BiH, Republika Srpska and Brčko District, so the safest rule for a camper traveller is to use registered camps or clearly authorised camper stops rather than assume a roadside night is legal.
Camper rule: local signs, protected-area rules and police/municipal instructions always beat a general country guide. Vehicle category can depend on height, axles and maximum authorised mass.
Motorway tolls
- The Federation A1 uses distance-based tolling and vehicle classes.
- JP Autoceste FBiH says tolls can be paid in cash, by accepted cards and in euros; change from euro cash is returned in domestic currency.
- There is no nationwide vignette comparable with Slovenia or Austria.
Green Card: this is country-of-registration specific
- Bosnia’s Green Card Bureau publishes a clear list.
- Vehicles registered in Albania, North Macedonia, Türkiye, Ukraine and several other Green Card-regime countries need a valid paper Green Card/IMIC.
- For countries in the Multilateral Agreement regime, the registration plate itself is generally recognised as proof of insurance.
Camping law is fragmented
- Do not rely on a single blog sentence saying “wild camping is legal in Bosnia”. Rules differ by entity and can also be layered with park, forest, municipal and mine-risk considerations.
- The Federation’s hospitality framework regulates campsites and camping equipment; the practical low-risk choice is a registered camp or explicitly authorised camper stop.
- Never choose an off-road overnight location without considering residual land-mine risk in remote areas.
